DC’s Messy Superman Crossovers

I’ve been reading comics for many years now, and I don’t remember a time when Superman crossovers seemed so haphazard. I think the Batman titles have done a fair job of allowing other titles to crossover for just a month and tell a related story but keeping the primary story in one title.  Superman stories, on the other hand, seem to be the victim of poor planning.

I remember not too long ago that there was a story in the Superman title that crossed over into the Action Comics Annual when none of the story had taken place in the Action Comics monthly.  (I also think the vice versa happened as well.)

There was also a recent crossover between the Batman/Superman and Worlds’ Finest titles where, if you wanted to read the story in order, you had to let 2 issues of Worlds’ Finest collect dust while waiting for part 3 of the story in Batman/Superman to finally ship. (But late-shipping titles is a complaint for another time. I’m looking at you, Forever Evil.)

I’m reminded of these problems because of the current Superman: Doomed crossover. {See the reading order checklist here.}  Superman #31 is involved this month (and issue #30 last month for a prelude to the story), but since Geoff Johns and John Romita Jr take over with issue #32, they are doing their own thing.  Batman/Superman #11 is included in the crossover this month but wasn’t even involved in the prelude.

Moving forward, the Superman: Doomed story
